Stroll or for that matter cycle for an hour or so around theshophouse-flanked streets of Luang Prabang and you will encounterexamples of Pascal Trahan’s meticulously restored historictimber-and-brick buildings most of which have been converted intoelegant small hotels. Among his newest projects is the restoration of the whitewashedVilla Viceroy reputedly the former residence of Prince PhetsarathRatanavongsa a famed erstwhile viceroy of Luang Prabang. It’sprobably the most exclusive accommodation in town commanding asmuch as $1000 a night with its owner Jean-Marc Huss aPhuket-based expatriate French artist remaining curiouslysecretive about future plans for the property. The house built in a traditional brick and half-timber stylehad fallen into disrepair when Trahan accepted the challenge torescue it. The rescue included adding a sympathetic secondary villaat the rear of the site as well as an understated tropical gardenbuilt in a similar style to that of the original house. Today it isanother admirable example of careful and considered restoration ina city that received a World Heritage listing in 1995 from theUnited Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural rganisationwith which Trahan works closely. But Villa Viceroy with its rich timber interiors is arelatively modest endeavour compared to other projects under thecontrol of Trahan’s firm Vikara Architecture in Luang Prabang. These include the conversion of a decrepit French prison into ahotel by the end of 2010 and the transformation of the old hospitalinto an exclusive Aman resort. It has been reported that $5. 2million was paid to buy the 2. 4-hectare site with a facility to bebuilt on the outskirts of town. Foreign investors are keen to exploit the cachet that LuangPrabang represents for nostalgic tourists eager to experience oneof the last largely intact remnants of South-East Asia’s colonialpast.
