The President of Thai Hotels Association southern chapter Matee Tanmanatragul the Tourism Authority of Thailand local Phuket office and Phuket Tourist Association members held a conference at Metropole Hotel discussing about a campaign to gain back tourists’ attention and their interests towards Phuket in the wake of the global recession and recent Thai airport blockages. Local hoteliers tour agents golf courses and related businesses presented their ideas and strategies towards the recovery measures. New tour packages and promotions were introduced. Special packages and promotions included changes in hotels’ ’super- deal’ prices being put on TAT’s website meaning that all associated hotels should reduce their rates down by 25% 50% and re-create more interesting and unique tour programs including more old town cultural attractions.

The projects with a combined 100 rooms will be in Bangkok and one resort location.

Bill Barnett MD of hospitality consulting firm C9 Hotelworks informed Andaman News that development of new Phuket hotel properties remains strong despite ongoing political issues in the country and international financial downturn. 30 new hotels are at various stages of development with over 4918 rooms due to hit the supply side over the next three years through 2011 according to his market research. Currently on the island there are nearly 40000 rooms in registered tourism establishments ranging from guest houses up through to branded hotels with approximately 10000 of these or 25% of total supply being international star rated. 2009 is set to see the largest surge in supply with 38% or 1850 new rooms scheduled to open.
